With the title Summerending, the Swiss artists Adrian Schiess (*1959 in Zurich) and Annelies Štrba (*1947 in Zug) summon that time of year when summer crosses over into autumn: this is the atmospheric and sometimes melancholy season of transition the two internationally acclaimed artists capture in a new group of flower still lifes. Here, the tradition of the classic floral still life is taken up by way of a collaboration, with Annelies Štrba photographing the motif and Adrian Schiess then developing it further by means of painting.
For the two artists, the pictorial theme chosen here is not only conceived as an evocation of transience, but also as a reflection on the relationship between the two art forms of photography and painting: How do these mediums relate to each other and how do they explore the world? As in an Impressionist painting, the eye oscillates between the recognizable object – flowers caught shortly before they wither and fade – and pure form and color. In this sense, the exhibition can also be understood as paying homage to the tradition of peinture, deploying both photographic and painterly means.
