Caspar David Friedrichs holistic concept of development, his choice of motifs, his thinking in cycles and companion pieces, as well as the relationship between closeness and distance in his pictorial spaces cannot be explained without cognizance of this developmental way of thinking. By applying the laws of nature to historical events, Friedrich believed he and his contemporaries could legitimately anticipate the coming of a »new era.« This publication for the first time explores the political and historical dimension of the art of C. D. Friedrich. The dissertation on Friedrich by Peter Märker, longstanding director of the Graphic Art Collection of the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt, is published here for the first time in book form.
