David Teniers
1610–1690 – Alltag und Vergnügen in Flandern

David Teniers the Younger, one of the leading masters of the Golden Age in Flanders, was already venerated by his contemporaries. His pleasurable depictions of rural life made him one of the most influential genre painters of the 17th century. A cheerful mood and naturalness characterize his scenes of everyday life: boisterous reveling at a village celebration; the enjoyments of feasting and smoking in the tavern; peasants at their daily labor. Clear composition, fine elaboration in coloration, inventiveness, and an unusual closeness to life typify his works. His works are based on innumerable sketches in which he captured chance scenes, characters, impressions of nature, and objects of daily use, which he took up again in his paintings. This richly illustrated monograph, produced on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe (11/05–02/06), brings together essays by renowned art historians and provides an insightful glimpse into the life and work this Flemish painter and the customs of his time.
