German photographer Frank Rothe has created an unusual portrait of China. Rothe breaks through the cliché that we usually think of "the Chinese" collectively and shows nude photographs of young and old citizens of Beijing and Shanghai: „One and a half billion people and the new politics of China could give that country the power to rule the world for the next future. But who are they? The Chinese? Get out of your clothes, was one of my first thoughts when I started with my project."
But China also indisputably stands for masses, overcrowded cities, and tremendous economic growth. For this reason, beside each portrait of a person, Rothe places a long-time exposed cityscape photograph showing masses of people, traffic nodes, or army battalions.
China Naked is one of the first known projects with Chinese nudes in that dimension.
Over the last decade Frank Rothe (born in Berlin, Germany, 1972) has worked on campaigns and as a staff photographer for international and national publications, including, Amica Italy, Stern, Die Zeit, Marie Claire USA, Esquire, Playboy, Guliver and many more. His work has been exhibited in Galeria Athos Bulcao Brazil, Goethe Institute Johannesburg in South Africa, Prague House of Photography in Czech Republic, Center of Contemporary Arts, Abilene, USA and other galleries throughout the world.
