Chalk drawings on transparent paper, sculptures pieced together from found wooden and iron objects, sometimes expanded into room-filling installations by incorporating video, multicolored carborundum and aquatint etchings – the spectrum of artistic media and means of expression employed by Günther Berlejung is virtually limitless, encompassing both drawing and graphic art, sculpture and installation, video and photography. At the center of it all is the artist’s critical exploration of man and his image, caught up between the contradictory needs of individual and society. Evoked here are existential themes such as life and transience, love and loneliness, war and destruction, which the artist (*1949) traces in his own poetic and yet disconcerting manner.
