In her photographs and films, Karen Irmer takes us to the boundaries of the perceptible. She reduces her pictorial means to a minimum – so much so that we are no longer able to trust our senses. Crafting a powerful aesthetic language, she subtly and sensitively breaks with familiar visual habits. This in-between world of imagery reveals fascinating glimpses of motifs whose presence is sometimes only perceptible as a trace.
Karen Irmer (b. 1974) did her artistic training at the Akademie der Künste in Munich with Sean Scully and Gerd Winner. In 2005 she was awarded a scholarship from the Else Heiliger Fund, part of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin. Further study grants took her to countries including France, Ireland, Japan and South Korea. Her work can be found at interna- tional art fairs and exhibitions. In 2011 she was invited, together with the Israeli sculptor Uriel Miron, to realize an exhibition project at the Fresh Paint Contemporary in Tel Aviv, Israel.
