Artist Melanie Wiora reduces her photographs to the essential elements, until they produce a clear and almost immaterial effect. Her project Outside Is In Me shows portraits of urban and industrial landscapes depicted in a snapshot-like mode. By deliberately choosing to focus sharply on certain areas and leave others blurred, people are made to seem unreal, like ghosts moving across the respective background in a strange trance. The unusual color scheme gives us the impression of being able to look behind the masks of the subjects’ faces. In the intensive editing work she carries out on the photographs, Melanie Wiora’s painting studies serve her well. She studied under Ulay, Stephan Balkenhol, Silvia Bächli and others. She has received numerous awards and grants both in Germany and abroad.
