In her project familia, which she started in 2001, Katharina Mayer focuses on the crucial part the family, as a global and universal way of life, plays in transmitting ethical and moral values. The photographer visits families in European cities to photograph them at home and in some cases also in the garden. She uses the tried-and-tested method of group photography to mark special family occasions taken in the past by professional photographers in studios. The family portrait marks the boundary between public and private. Katharina Mayer’s purpose is to discover this boundary and to experiment with it.
Katharina Mayer (*1958) studied photography at Dusseldorf Academy with Bernd Becher and Nan Hoover. Her work has been exhibited widely across Europe and is represented in numerous international museums and collections. She lives and works in Düsseldorf.
