Konrad Rufus Müller is one of the best known portrait photographers of the postwar period, his life’s work encompassing over 2,800 images. A selection of 400 of the best is now presented in this catalogue. Müller’s style is very individual: he works exclusively in black-and-white, eschewing artificial light, his only tool a Rolleiflex camera from 1975. He is not accompanied by a crew of assistants and stylists, and his paper prints are created in a small darkroom, making each photograph a unique original. This volume gathers together the high points of his career in encyclopedic fashion: next to a complete series of German chancellors are statesmen and politicians such as Joschka Fischer, Bruno Kreisky, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, Vladimir Putin, François Mitterrand and Anwar el-Sadat; artists including Sergiu Celibidache and Friedrich Dürrenmatt; and the entertainers Thomas Gottschalk and Harald Schmidt. Also included are landscape portraits, cityscapes, still lifes, children’s portrait series, young concert visitors, the portrait of a Romanian »wolfman,« peasants, craftsmen, big-city denizens.
Müller’s photographs have been featured in Europe’s foremost magazines.
